Jeffrey Yuen: Pediatrics (Xiao Er Ke) is one of the major systematized specialties developed by the Imperial Medical Academy during the Song Dynasty, following the dictates established by Qian Yi (1032-1113 CE). Unlike the physiology of adults, young children are considered tender shoots and their constitution must be properly protected a nd nourished. In addition, the rooting of their shen is still considered unstable, sometimes due to poor fetal education and other times, due to improper neonatal care – which is becoming increasingly common in contemporary societies. This seminar will focus on the health of neonates and their progression into young children. Emphasis will be placed on maintaining wellness and how to treat common pediatric conditions encountered in Chinese medicine in the West.

Day 1:

  • Energetics of the Pre-natal Environment
  • Gestational Influence on the Neonate
  • Energetics of a Young Child (Exuberance Yang, Insufficient Yin)
  • Dietary Considerations for Children
  • Point Energetics and Development in Children
  • Dynamics of the Shen in Children

Day 2:

  • Understanding Diagnostic Aspects for Children
  • Common Pediatric Conditions and their Treatment
  • Pediatric Conditions Encountered by Chinese Medicine in the West
  • Shen and Childhood Development
  • Pestilent Factors and their Concerns
  • Questions and Answers
